Do More of What Makes You Sparkle

Why Joy Matters for Your Mental Health

There is something powerful about the simple reminder: Do more of what makes you sparkle.

It sounds lighthearted, but underneath those words is an important message about mental health. So much of adulthood can become focused on responsibility—work, parenting, relationships, finances, schedules, expectations, and taking care of everyone else. Somewhere along the way, we can forget to ask ourselves a simple question:

What actually makes me feel alive?

Not what impresses other people.
Not what we think we should enjoy.
Not what looks good from the outside.

What brings us genuine joy?

We Need More Than Just Survival

Sometimes we become so focused on getting through the day that we stop making room for the things that make life meaningful.

We accomplish the next task. We answer the next email. We get the kids where they need to go. We take care of our responsibilities. We keep moving.

And while there is nothing wrong with being responsible, a life built entirely around obligation can leave us feeling emotionally depleted.

Joy is not frivolous. Joy is part of well-being.

Doing something simply because it makes you happy can be a meaningful form of self-care. It can remind you that you are more than your responsibilities and that your identity is bigger than the roles you carry for other people.

What Makes You Sparkle?

Maybe it is dancing in your kitchen.

Maybe it is spending time near the ocean, taking a long walk, listening to your favorite music, creating something, laughing with your children, traveling, reading, being with people who make you feel safe, or simply sitting quietly with a cup of coffee.

Maybe it is something you loved as a child but stopped making time for.

Maybe you don’t even know anymore.

If that is the case, start paying attention.

Notice the moments when you lose track of time. Notice what makes you smile without trying. Notice who you feel most like yourself around. Notice what leaves you feeling energized rather than drained.

Those moments can offer clues.

Stop Waiting for Permission to Enjoy Your Life

Many people unconsciously believe they need permission to prioritize themselves.

They wait until the house is clean.
Until work slows down.
Until the kids are older.
Until everyone else is okay.
Until they have accomplished enough.

But there will always be another responsibility waiting.

Making room for joy does not mean neglecting the people you love. It means recognizing that you matter, too.

You do not have to earn rest.

You do not have to justify happiness.

And you do not have to wait for a perfect life before allowing yourself to enjoy the life you have right now.

Protect What Brings You Joy

Not everything that makes you sparkle will be understood by everyone around you—and that’s okay.

Part of personal growth is learning to distinguish between what genuinely nourishes you and what simply earns approval from others.

Maybe something that brings you joy seems silly to someone else.

Do it anyway.

Maybe you have outgrown certain relationships, routines, or expectations.

Give yourself permission to reevaluate them.

Your mental health deserves space for authenticity.

Create Small Moments of Sparkle

You don’t need a major life change to reconnect with yourself.

Start small.

Take ten minutes to listen to music you love. Go outside. Call someone who makes you laugh. Buy the flowers. Take the class. Wear the outfit. Plan the day trip. Make the appointment. Put your phone away and be fully present for something you enjoy.

Small moments matter.

When we intentionally create moments of pleasure, connection, creativity, and meaning, we begin reminding ourselves that life is about more than simply getting through it.

Your Joy Is Worth Protecting

There will be difficult seasons. There will be grief, stress, disappointment, uncertainty, and days when getting through the day is enough.

You don’t have to force positivity.

But when there is room for joy, let yourself experience it.

Let yourself laugh.

Let yourself be silly.

Let yourself try something new.

Let yourself be excited.

Let yourself feel proud.

Let yourself sparkle.

Because your mental health isn’t only about managing what hurts. It’s also about cultivating what makes life feel meaningful.

So today, ask yourself:

What makes me sparkle?

And then ask an even more important question:

How can I make a little more room for that in my life?

You deserve a life that doesn’t just look good from the outside.

You deserve a life that feels good on the inside, too.

✨ Do more of what makes you sparkle. ✨
